I remember as a young teenager being upset because my older brother would be invited to parties and not me. I remember standing at the kitchen counter, invitation to my brother in hand and complaining, ‘It’s not fair. I’m friends with them too. Why wasn’t I invited?’

They trooped over to the barn and poked around in the bales of straw. No Friedrich.
‘Perhaps he’s in the outhouse,’ Amie said.
‘Or under it,’ Joseph added.
‘What do you mean?’ Herr Biar asked.
‘He might be in the cellar underneath,’ Amie said.
‘What cellar?’
‘The one with the glowing blue light,’ Joseph said. ‘Maybe he’s hiding there.’
‘Or gone to the other side,’ Amie said.
‘What do you mean, other side?’ Herr Biar scratched his forehead.

‘Anyway, it’s—you shouldn’t—and if you go in there,’ she pointed over the gate swinging ajar in the breeze, ‘you could get into serious trouble.’
‘Why not?’ Adam pushed the gate. ‘I’m game if you are.’ He ran towards the historic church.
Amie hissed. ‘Get back here!’
Adam shouted. ‘But I want to see the ghost.’ His small frame blurred in the darkness.
